Frequently Asked Questions

1. What exactly is Pilates?

Pilates is a system of over 500 controlled exercises that engage the mind and condition the total body. It is a balanced blend of strength and flexibility training that improves posture, reduces stress and creates long, lean muscles without bulking up. Pilates works several muscle groups simultaneously through smooth, continuous motion, with a particular concentration on strengthening and stabilizing the core (the abdomen, back and pelvic girdle region, sometimes referred to as the "powerhouse").

The focus is on quality of movement rather than quantity, which makes one feel invigorated rather than exhausted after a session. Pilates takes a balanced approach so that no muscle group is overworked and the body works as an efficient, holistic system in sport and daily activity.

3. What age group is Pilates for?

Pilates can be beneficial for virtually all ages, fitness levels and body conditions. The method is like a bridge between physical fitness and physical therapy, and can be adapted, modified and customised for individual needs. It's more about fitness condition than age.

4. Can I exercise Pilates during pregnancy?

You will need to consult your doctor before embarking on a program. Pilates is a suitable exercise method during pregnancy. Evidence demonstrates that, if performed under supervision, Pilates exercises activate the core abdominal muscles and the pelvic floor muscles.
Many of my clients benefited from Pilates sessions before and after pregnancy. They have found that the method has helped them to strengthen and tone the postural muscles, carry the foetus, deliver the baby and get back into shape after birth.

5. Do I need to be fit to begin Pilates?

There is no pre-requisite on your fitness level. You can begin Pilates classes anytime, at any fitness level.

6. What should I wear?

You should wear clothing that is comfortable for you to work out in. Try to avoid over-sized attire that would make it difficult for Chris to observe your body during the session. All clients are required to wear socks. Avoid dangling jewellery for safety and comfort.
